Louis Sullivan Building T-Shirt

$25.00

In 1914 famed American architect and visionary, Louis Sullivan was commissioned by The Home Building Association Company to build their bank on the corner of Third and Main in downtown Newark.  This was one of eight such banks that Sullivan would build in the Midwest, all of which became known as “Jewel Boxes” due to their small size and ornate, intricate features.  Newark’s Jewel Box has been standing solidly on the Courthouse Square for over a century…waiting.  Waiting for a group of people, as visionary and committed as Sullivan himself, to come forward with a restoration plan as strong as the terra-cotta clad building itself.  In 2013 the Louis Sullivan Bank Build of Newark was gifted to the Licking County Foundation by Newark native, Stephen Jones.  Restoration and use plans were thoughtfully created by a team of local collaborators and restoration architects; Darryl Rogers and Peter Krajanek.  After four years of planning, this hallmark building - which expresses the best of American genius - was ready for its next life.  Once restoration is complete, the Louis Sullivan Bank Building of Newark will become the permanent home of Explore Licking County, and a hub of visitor and residential activity.
